The Rev. Kenneth James Grant was born on the 2nd February 1839, a little over 164 years ago, to a Scottish God-fearing family in Nova Scotia. He followed his Grandfather's profession and became a trained Teacher in 1854 at the age of 15. He graduated in Theology in Princeton, New Jersey in 1861. He was licensed the same year, by the Presbytery of Pictou County, to preach the Gospel. He was later ordained and inducted as a Minister on 18th November 1862 at the Church in Merigomish.
He was twice married; first to Sara Ogilvie Geddes on 18th June 1865. By this marriage one son Thomad Geddes was born on May 19th 1866. Sarah died on 18th July 1867.
His second marriage to Catherine Copeland on 13th October 1870. The same year of his arrival in Trinidad. By this marriage there were three girls and one son. Ada, George, Margaret and Sarah Claudia who was well-known to many of us at Susamachar. His wife Catherine Copeland died on February 20th 1912. Dr. K. J. Grant died on January 1st 1931.
Dr. Grant was the second Pioneer Missionary to Trinidad. He founded Susamachar Church in Trinidad on July 7th 1872 and Naparima College in 1900.
As we celebrate the rededication of our extended Church...let us at Susamachar emulate the example of our FOUNDER by placing our Candles on top of the bushel, so that the rays of light will illumine the lives of others.
